IOC-UNESCO EU DG-ECHO CoastWAVE Project Workshop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Planning and Implementation for Tsunami Response in NEAM Region, 5-6 October 2022.

The IOC-UNESCO and partners in the Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Ocean had carried out several workshops and trainings over the years to support the development of tsunami Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This workshop will set a benchmark for tsunami SOP development in NEAM region in the context of the CoastWAVE project by sharing experiences and lessons learned from the other ICG / tsunami regions.

The workshop had covered the following items:

  1. Review current SOPs and governing frameworks, identify gaps and possible challenges on establishing tsunami SOP Plans at national and local levels
  2. Introduce SOP Standards and Guidelines MG 76 and MG 82 of IOC-UNESCO
  3. Guide partners on the SOP preparation workflow for stakeholders and communities
  4. Develop and integrate the SOPs between stakeholders
  5. Share experiences, examples, lessons learned and references for TRPs and SOPs from other regions (Indian Ocean and Caribbean).

Outcomes & Results Obtained:

  • IOC-UNESCO and JRC of the European Commission are co-organizing a workshop on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Planning and Implementation for Tsunami Response in NEAM region from 5 to 6 October 2022 at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy following the hybrid workshop on the Requirements, Challenges, Opportunities for Local Tsunami Warning Systems in the Context of Multi-Hazard Disaster Risk Mitigation in the NEAM Region to be held from 4 to 5 October 2022.
